Motivation is a big issue in training. I have been asked a million different ways; “What’s the goal?” “How do I keep motivated to do this everyday?”……. It’s a common problem. How do you keep the energy up and your focus on point? It comes down to goals. Setting goals and working to achieve them.
Motivation comes from a desire to achieve something that is stronger then the distractions around you. How do you stop from eating the cheese steak at 2 am when you are trying to drop weight? If you are serious about your goals, you will have the determination to stay on point. How do you get your ass off the couch after a long day at work and train? It comes from a desire to achieve success vs achieving a dent on the cushion.
When your motivation is diminishing, ask yourself what you want? If you don’t want anything then you won’t have to do anything. But, if you want something you will have to work for it. Figure out what you want and keep striving for it. It can be monumental change or it can be simple, like a faster mile time or heavier squat.
Set a bench mark for yourself. Go run a mile as fast as you can and lift a few motions as heavy as you can. These are your base. Now set a timeline to get faster and stronger, then work towards it. For a little added incentive, go social. Post your baseline and intended improvements online. A little social pressure can go a long way to motivate.
We all need help from time to time to stay on course. That is why we join community oriented places like Real Elite vs your local big box globo gym. When you train at a place like Real Elite, you know you are not alone in your fight. You are part of a team and that makes a huge difference!
To recap; to ignite the motivation you need goals. Set a baseline then establish the improvements you want within a time-frame. Knowing what you want to achieve keeps you focused.
Go ask yourself what you want and get in the gym!
