My favorite head scratcher is when people walk into my gym and ask me to train them for free because they are going to be famous one day. Seriously, you think because you want something, it may happen? Sure, it may. But not today and my time is valuable.
I am married with 2 kids. I don’t answer to you, I answer to them. So, when you want me to train you for free – you need to convince my wife the damage I am going to do to myself, the time I won’t be with my family, and the paying members I won’t be servicing is all worth it due to your personal potential greatness. Isn’t going to happen, my wife is more practical than I have been known to be.
Believing in yourself is important. Thinking you are entitled to anything due to your self-belief is stupid. You have to earn your place in this world and you have to build trust before you go for the big ask. Your potential and natural ability mean nothing until you take ownership for them and develop them in ways that actually benefit more than your inflated sense of self.
I have given away my time for free to developing talent. I can’t remember 1 case that worked out. Without a personal investment, people fall off. Free does not work. When you have nothing to lose when you walk, it is too easy to walk off when the work gets hard or the results are not what you dreamed of.
For your benefit I am not training you for free. You need to start just like everyone else, pay your way, and earn your place at the table. Once you have skills that can be shared, I may even pay you to train and teach. We can’t start there, we have to work to get there.
Pull out your wallet, stop asking for discounts, adjust how you are living to afford your training, and stop acting like your dream is a reality until it actually is. Nobody owes you anything but you do owe your coaches for their efforts and you owe your fellow members enough respect to behave as they do, because you are no more or less special than anyone else in the gym.
